December 2007
"There are two ways of spreading light;
to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." -- Edith Wharton
This is my commitment every day when I get out of bed. But it’s especially
prevalent for me during this special time of year--festive candles and lights are
burning everywhere I turn, reminding me of this most important responsibility
I have: to shine my light and to reflect yours.
With current world events and religious diversity reflected in every newspaper,
every street corner and every store, and even among my family, friends and
colleagues, I can’t help but reflect on how crucial it is to keep the light
burning within me, at all costs, no matter how challenging life’s circumstances.
Here are some ways I commit to keeping my fire burning and my light shining
in 2008:
- Align myself with my highest purpose each day.
- Be the person G-d intended me to be.
- Work diligently to keep my demons at bay.
- Feel the wellbeing inside of me.
- Learn from my mistakes; use my struggles to grow and shine more brightly.
- Be grateful for my past; it has created who I am today.
- Continue teaching, helping and serving others.
Finally, nothing feeds my soul or helps my candle burn more brightly than
spreading goodness to others. Rabbi Aaron Moss states, "The more goodness we
spread, the more goodness we have. There is an endless supply of light in
your soul. You will never run out of goodness."
May all our lights burn brightly and radiate in 2008.
